Report on seminar: ‘Career in Genetics & Crops Breeding’

Date:                    17/4/08

Time:                    9.00 am – 12.00

Venue:                   National Science Center Bukit Kiara

Topic:                    Career in Genetics & Crops Breeding in Malaysia

Teacher in charge: Pn Sang Fay Lee

Class involve:        5B

Introduction

-          Slide show of dinosaurs &  life cycle of insects

-          Introduction of Prof  Dr Yap Thoo Chai is the Academic Director of Cubic Consultancy

-          History of genetics: Mendelian experiment

-          phenotype = genotype + environment

-          heredity = genotype/phenotype

Contents

-          various breeding methods: selection, hybridization, vegetative propagation, back selection, predigree selection, backcross breeding, polyploidy breeding, genetic engineering

-          rubber: introduced in Perang Besar (Putrajaya), started with species RRIM 893, which produced 2300 kg/ha

-          oil palm: started as a decorative plant. New species: Tenera= Dura x Psifera

-          coconut: MAWA= Malaya Dwarf  x Weston African Tall

-          pineapple: Masmerah = Sarawak pineapple x Mardi Hybrid 1

-          Sweet corn: Cinta = Bakti x Bakti 1

-          Long bean: Like 30

-          Papaya: Super Sweet Hawaiian = Hawaiian variety x local variety

-          Big mouse: mouse + human genes

-          All new variety are evidence of successful genetic crossing with the help of biotechnology

-          Career in Applied science will have more employment opportunities as it is more practical & available in Malaysia. Theoretical science can only end in graduates working as scientist, lecturers, or teachers as it is very much restricted by the environment. There are fewer employment opportunities in Malaysia as not much funds are channeled for research & development. Malaysia is still a developing country which need a lot of  fund to develop basic infrastructure & public facilities. It is not a very attractive job as it is very time consuming & need much dedication in research. Minimum period of time to get results on the transfer of genetic variety is 6-7 years
