Report
on PKIK CARNIVAL 2009
On the 19th of April 2009,
Persatuan Kanak-kanak Istimewa Kajang
Selangor (PKIK) held a carnival in S.J.K
Yu Hua field from 11 am to 4 pm. The Interact
Club of SMJK Yu Hua Kajang under the
supervision of Mdm Sang Fay Lee & Mdm Liew
Poh Peng, has volunteered to help out in the
event by selling tokens and helping out
during the carnival. Nine members who
volunteered to help were Leong Chen Onn, Low
Weng Harng, Subash Rengasamy, Tan Toon Seng,
Yang Keat Siang, John Eric Yeo Jin Wei, Kam
Yuen Yuk, Chua Su
Yee and WongShwu Peng. The others
helped in selling the tokens to raise fund before the carnival.
The
PKIK is a welfare based organization serving
the needs of children/persons with learning
disabilities. It runs training programmes to
help them in their overall development,
learning independent living skills to enable
them to lead a meaningful life . PKIK is
dependent on donations from organizations
and members of the public to help people
with special needs. PKIK Carnival is
organized to raise funds for PKIK’S
Building Fund. There were varieties of food
and refreshment, games and entertainments.
There were a lucky draw held hourly and special bargains
at the jumble sale. For every RM 10
donation, donors will receive a booklet of
coupons to enjoy at the Carnival.
Our
Interact Club members arrived at the venue
as early as 7.30 am for the briefing of each
person’s task and assignment. Other PKIK
volunteers arrived at 8 am to set up the stalls
and prepare food and beverages. Our members
started to help them unload and unpack boxes to their own respective
stalls. Mdm Sang Fay Lee was also there to
see how we were coping with the heavy tasks.
With the aid of other volunteers from
University
of Nottingham,
the preparation went on smoothly.
Around 10.30 am, participants started to visit
their favourite
booths and stalls, even though the carnival
was yet to begin. After finished unloading,
each of our members was assigned to aid the
volunteers with their stalls. Some of us
helped out with the food and beverage stalls while
others helped in the car park area.
Unfortunately, in the evening, heavy rain
caused a ruckus.. Most of the stalls
had to be temporally shifted to another.. However, things
were still under control and the event went
on well. Members tried their best to promote
their items and cleared al the l stocks later in the
evening. At the end of the day,
volunteers started to clear up their stalls. Our members helped
to carry back PKIK’s belongings to the
counter and started to load back everything
into the truck. Everything ended around 6pm
and some of the volunteers were allowed to
go back while others need to stay for the
next truck to go back to PKIK base.
We as volunteers for the PKIK
Carnival are elated and satisfied with the
noble job done and we would like to thank PKIK for
giving us an opportunity to participate in
this wonderful event. Even though very
exhausted, we were glad to be given such an
opportunity to experience new things.
