Event:
Gulmarg hill resort. A 43 km drive to
the entrance and a furthur 35 km ascend up the mountains by
bus. Roads are good. The valley of Gulmarg has the highest
skiing centre in the world and a 14 km cable car ride
passing tops of mountains and also horse riding. At
2650 m (8750 ft), the Gulmarg Golf Club in Kashmir is among
the world's highest golf courses, and it may just be the
most beautiful. The British built the first 6 hole course
here in 1890. By the 1920s, the splendor of the mountain
setting was so famous that two 18-hole courses was built.
Buried under thick snow for 3 months in a year, the turf is
wondrously soft and ball fly faster in the rarified air.
This club is located in the war zone - territory claimed by
both Pakistan and India. Still, there is one benifit to
Gulmarg's misfortune: you 're quite likely to have the
course to yourself . Photographers: WebTeam Photographers with Sony
